JOHN GREER says CREATE YOUR BOOK

PROBLEM: Need capital to expand your business? Banks tend have so many problems that they have tightened up on their lending to entrepreneurs. Many of those banks are is such distress that they are hanging on by their finger tips. The FDIC has ordered those in distress not to lend unless the customer is "gold plated".

SOLUTION: Borrow from individuals who are lending to the banks. Borrow from the individuals who give money to the banks in exchange for a CD that pays them almost no interest.

How to you get the individual to believe in you? First of all, you might be more solid than many of the banks. Have you heard that many local banks failed? You are still in business. You are probably more profitable than many banks.

BOOK OF JOHN
Tell the world about yourself by creating a book about yourself. Several years ago I created the Book of John. It has four chapters based on CASE, Character, Ability, Stability, and Equity. Those are the four items that a prudent lender looks for when making a loan. As time permits, I will expand on how I created the Book of John, what I was able to accomplish using it to attract low interest loans from individuals and how my Book of John opened opportunities for me. I urge you to build a book about yourself.

Paul Gruber
, inspirational speaker and internationally acclaimed coach, has been asked by me to give a brief presentation this Tuesday on the Seven Steps to Success.

At this FREE presentation you will hear how to:
1) Set definite Goals
2) Stop Running Yourself Down
3) Stop thinking of reasons why you cannot be successful
4) Adjust Your Attitude
5) Change Your Image of Yourself
6) Act the Part
7) Gratitude

Surround yourself with positive entrepreneurs. See you Tuesday.

DO WE HAVE A PRESENTER NEXT WEEK?
– YES, the answer is always yes! JASON SILVERSTEIN will present the famous entrepreneur of his choice and tell us, in 5 minutes or less, some of the characteristics and traits of this person, and how we can apply some of it to our own business.

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE WEEK
John always does a great job introducing our speakers. This time he had a little problem with the last name of our presenter. HAILEY SHAUGHNESSY commented that only people in Boston could pronounce this name properly!

The ice was broken and we headed right for a different kind of presentation. John's table (a special table for his regulars) was transformed into a game show with a buzzer. Hailey gave the three candidates, John Greer, Michael Wallace and Raymond Clayman questions and told them to hit the buzzer when they could answer the question.

FIRST QUESTION
Who invented the computer?
A. Charles Babbage
B. Bill Gates
C. Al Gore
Hailey started with the first question and we were all curious who would hit the buzzer first. YES, it was Michael Wallace, and he guessed it, Charles Babbage. It takes a British person to know that…!

SECOND QUESTION
When was the computer invented?
A. 1823
B. 1923
C. 1963
Hailey continued her questioning of the panel and there was definite hesitation, even amongst the group….! I believe John Greer mentioned 1923, that date seemed right. Wrong, guess again.

The first computer was invented by Charles Babbage in 1823. He was a mathematics professor at Cambridge University. During this time people who performed mathematical calculations were called computers. At Cambridge, he saw the high error-rate of this human-driven process and started his life’s work of trying to calculate the tables mechanically. He began in 1822 with what he called the Difference Engine. Although he received ample funding for the project, it was never completed.

He later designed an improved version, calling it the Difference Engine No. 2, which was also not completed. Soon after the attempt at making the difference engine crumbled, Babbage started designing a different, more complex machine called the Analytical Engine. The engine is not a single physical machine but a succession of designs that he tinkered with until his death in 1871.

The first difference engine was composed of around 25,000 parts, weighed fifteen tons, and stood 8 ft high. Difference Engine No. 2 was constructed from 1989-1991, using Babbage's plans and 19th century manufacturing tolerances. It performed its first calculation at the London Science Museum returning results to 31 digits, far more than the average modern pocket calculator.

The lesson we can learn from this is finish what you start! Babbage had adequate support and funding but was constantly looking to the future and how he could improve his invention instead of finishing even just one machine before moving onto the next.

THIRD QUESTION
Who was the first computer programmer?
A. Ada Lovelace
B. Steve Jobs
C. Oprah Winfrey
Hailey was looking at her “game show participants” and they looked perplexed. The group was calling out "Steve Jobs"! Right, he was a computer nerd; we all know it is not Oprah’s department. Ada Lovelace? What a surprise!

Augusta Ada Byron King, Countess of Lovelace, (and Lord Byron, the poet’s daughter) was a mathematician, and one of the few people who fully understood Babbage's ideas. She created a program for the Analytical Engine which was run using punch cards. These cards were put in the machine and run automatically. During a nine-month period in 1842-43, Lovelace translated Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea's memoir on Babbage's newest proposed machine, the Analytical Engine. With the article, she appended a set of notes. The notes are longer than the memoir itself and include, in complete detail, a method for calculating a sequence of Bernoulli numbers. Based on this work, Lovelace is now widely credited with being the first computer programmer and her method is recognized as the world's first computer program. Though Babbage's engine was never built, Lovelace's notes are important in the early history of computers. She also foresaw the capability of computers to go beyond mere calculating or number-crunching while others, including Babbage himself, focused only on these capabilities.

The lesson here is to see the possibilities and just do it! Ada didn’t wait for Babbage to complete his invention before she created her computer program. She understood the possibilities of the computer and immediately created the first computer program. Instead of focusing on the future or dwelling on the past she focused on what she could do in the moment and succeeded.

Hailey ended her presentation by reading us the mortality manifesto. These are wise words for everybody, especially entrepreneurs.

Thank you for presenting a different and clever way to teach us about your entrepreneur of the week Hailey, we all enjoyed it and it was fun to learn and be entertained.

Mortality Manifesto

I was born. I will die.

I accept this. I embrace it.

I do not dwell on the past, nor do I waste time worrying about the future.

I use each moment to the fullest.

I always strive to ensure that every thought, word and action is moving me in the direction of my dreams.

Because fear is based on an imagined future, my focus on the present makes me fearless.

Accepting my mortality allows me to live a life full of vitality and power!

A life filled with joy!

A life with no regrets!

This is the gift that I give to myself - today and every day!
Live in the moment…fearlessly!

HAVE YOU HEARD OF TWITTER?

Lately, the YES participants got very educated on Social Networks by our own group. We talked about Facebook, LinkedIn and finally JASZY MCALLISTER did the honor by presenting us with Twitter. She told us that she is by far not an expert on this "fashionable" Social Network, but she is delighted to share some discoveries she made herself on the topics below.

A. What is Twitter?
B. How does it work?
C. Why should you care?
D. How can Twitter help you grow your business?
E. Twitter Terms

A) What is Twitter?
Twitter is one of the fastest growing Social Networks. It is a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices.
Launched in March of 2006, Twitter is a privately funded startup based in San Fran, CA.
Jack Dorsey, an American software architect and businessperson, created it. Business Week called him one of technology's "best and brightest." MIT's Technology Review named him in the TR35, an outstanding innovator under the age of 35. Check out the following link at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Dorsey
He was inspired by LiveJournal and AOL Instant Messaging.

B) How does it work?
One must create an account, but it only takes minutes. It is free to join. Simply complete a profile, including uploading a picture. Link the newly created account to a cell phone, web page, or instant messenger program, which allows the user to receive and send messages to and from others. An update that is sent to friends is called a “tweet."
It works in countries all around the world, people are able to:
• Follow the sources most relevant to them - either by industry, special interest groups, etc.
• Access information via Twitter as it happens—from breaking world news to updates from friends.

C) Twitter is:
• Simple real time communication
• Twitter asks one question, "What's happening?"
• Answers must be under 140 characters in length and can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web.

D) How can Twitter help you grow your businesses?
• helps businesses stay connected to their customers
• use it to quickly share information with people interested in your company
• gather real-time market intelligence and feedback
• build relationships with customers, partners and other people who care about your company
• use Twitter to tell a company (or anyone else) that you've had a great—or disappointing—experience with their business, offer product ideas, and learn about great offers.
• direct access to employees and a way to contribute to your company
• Twitter works well as an opinion poll.
• Twitter breaks news faster than other sources, especially if the news impacts online denizens
• Twitter brings great minds together, and gives you daily opportunities to learn, if you look for it, and/or if you follow the right folks.
• Twitter helps with business development, if your prospects are online
• Twitter can augment customer service.

Some Twitter key terms
Following - Your circle or community
Tweet - Your message
Re-tweet – forwarding received messages to followers
@username (Identity)
DM – direct message or replies

If you missed the presentation, you can watch Jaszy’s actual presentation on YouTube: YouTube - How Can Twitter Help Your Business

Jaszy, thank you for your great overview on Twitter. You have filled us in on some useful details, now we can make our choice to be on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or all of the above.

Each of these Social Networks has its audiences, advantages and disadvantages. It is definitely the new way of communicating and staying in touch with your family, friends, customers and associates.

Thank you YES participants, it is always interesting to find out the different views and we definitely learn something every time.
